La Big Vic and Underwater Peoples are excited to bring you this limited edition 12″ dub remix LP of La Big Vic’s debut Actually. Take a look at the announcement on IMPOSE, including an interview with La Big Vic’s Toshio Masuda, and listen to the debut of “Mr. Broken Bird Dub”.

You can pre-order the record in the UP Store now, it will ship on or before February 21st.

With Dub The World!: Actually Revisited, A conceptual sequel to La Big Vic’s debut, Underwater Peoples would like to invite you beneath the great cit of Actually. Down here, things may sound familiar to you, but certainly not the same. Reverberations cast long, evolving shadows, across the tunnel walls. Flickers of light are extinguished by sirens.

Support Ad Hoc!

Much of my young career has been spent pondering the current state of critique and its effect on popular music. I’m starting to come to a rather crass conclusion – Our generation has no excuse for its tastes. In the past, large corporations held sway, dictating what the masses listened to like the woman at your office who brought the boombox. The fickle corporate boss lady picked the stations, picked the songs and adversely, picked our tastes. Rebellious and curious individuals had to resort to making their own magazines, dubbing their own tapes and crafting their own mail order communities.

The Internet killed that woman and her boom box, replacing her with headphones for the whole office. After a period of rejoice, the responsibility sank in. I don’t think we fully realized how much of our collective identity is tied to the art we imbibe. Public Policy is not a government issue, it is dictated by box office hits, New York Times Best Sellers and the Billboard Top 200. Don’t you agree that Adele, “The Help” and “Underworld: Awakening” tell us more about who we are as a people than Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich?

Anyway, the corporations have fumbled the all valuable public policy ball. The ball is now perilously bobbling around on the ground, waiting for some clever linebacker to just flop on it. I believe that Ad Hoc could be one of those linebackers.

“Ad Hoc is a daily destination for MP3s, videos, mixes, interviews, artist’s writings, and cultural commentary– curated for quality, and with an emphasis on emerging artists and musical movements that best exemplify the new grassroots, Internet-fueled DIY.”

Underwater Peoples is excited and deeply honored to be apart of the Ad Hoc launch. Jump over to the Kickstarter and lend a hand, we’ve donated some records and a 3D Washington Hat. Today, the civically minded individual must pick his leaders everywhere. It’s a hassle, but its better than corporate shills force feeding you shit and turning you into an idiot!

STREAM BOTH LIAM THE YOUNGER LPs ON PREFIX

Stream ALL of both LPs we’ve remastered for Liam the Younger on PrefixMag.com, or listen to After the Graveyard and Clear Skies Over Black River below.

Both vinyl full-lengths are available for pre-order in the UP Store right now and will ship on February 7th. Purchase both in the “special deals” section and save $4.

Here is what Prefix had to say about Liam:

If you’ve spent significant time with Titus Andronicus, you can likely make a pretty good guess what one of its founding members’ solo projects would sound like. Liam the Younger has played guitar on each of Titus’ records, but he took time off from the band’s relentless touring to focus on his schooling. From the sounds of it, that was time well-spent. After distributing them only as CD-R’s and cassettes to his friends, Liam’s first two albums, After the Graveyard and Clear Skies Over Black River, are finally getting their proper releases from Underwater Peoples and A Learning Computer (both are available for pre-order from Underwater Peoples here).

While Titus cling tightly to Bruce Springsteen‘s hopeful ballads of life and labor in a run-down industrial town, Liam takes greater influence from the grainy, patriotic protest songs that begot not only the rock ‘n’ roll, but also the American ways of life and labor that the Boss was responding to. The songs are barren and honest like any other album recorded in a bedroom over the past ten or twenty years, so it says a lot that someone like Woody Guthrie should be his most immediately identifiable point of reference. But while he extends himself to jump from the wide-eyed retrospections of a Youth Lagoon to the powerful balladry of aTallest Man On Earth, his most direct lineage is laid bare on After the Graveyard‘s “Ode to Then.” And if you’ve followed the melodramatic and historically inclined story of Titus Andronicus, then it should be no surprise that the second-biggest influence on the recordings is the reclusive, Anne Frank-chronicling Neutral Milk Hotel frontman Jeff Mangum.

TWO FULL LENGTHS OF TRANQUIL FOLK FROM LIAM THE YOUNGER

AFTER THE GRAVEYARD & CLEAR SKIES OVER BLACK RIVER

SHIP FEBRUARY 7TH, PRE-ORDER NOW

Is there anything as ubiquitous and personal as nostalgia? It is a feeling we all readily acknowledge and are inescapably drawn to, often finding it in the same places, while cherishing it for our own reasons. Simply reading the word evokes a unique slew of images in all of us, from which we subconsciously define the sentiment. Yet culturally, at least from an American perspective, it is common to find that we describe the emotion using very similar phrases and images, as if they were drawn from a collective memory – a national dream in the most literal sense.

Liam Betsonʼs music lends itself to our collective memories – the true American dream, blasting images into the blackness of our minds like a spinning animation wheel making a horse gallop.

After the Graveyard and Clear Skies Over Black River are vivifying and mnemonic works that bestow the same gift of empathy that Dorothea Lange gave our grandparents. Liam the Youngerʼs songwriting equalizes the bucolic dreams of our American consciousness, pacifying the storm waves of understanding each other. It is both euphoric and lonely in a way that Guthriean folk has a tendency to be, yet is altogether present and its own.

Underwater Peoples first came about these recordings almost three years ago. We’ve listened to them ad naseum ever since and have dreamed of the day we’d be able to release them on vinyl. Now with some help from Liam’s new personal label (A Learning Computer) We’re proud to announce the records will be available for purchase on February 7th. The covers will be screen printed and the vinyl comes with two downloads of each album! Check the Combo Deals section for a nice price on buying both.

Gorgeous Christmas Music from Our Pals at McGorlick Trees

I subscribe to a demographic of Jewish people who unabashedly love Christmas. We’re not entangled in the “Holy Birth v. All Mighty Dollar” debate that Christian folk grapple with.. We just get to enjoy a season of woodsy scents and merry melodies…So as a casual, peripheral, scent and melody oriented Christmas fan, nothing in the world could possibly be better than a mix of Christmas songs, played by my pals…. who are also selling a wide array of Christmas Trees.  Give it a listen below! And then, please, watch the incomparable Chaakles genuinely describe his Christmas Tree Stand near McGorlick Park. The Mix was compiled by your friends at Fire Talk.
